Victoria’s Brent Polischuk on Discipline, Teamwork, and Staying Consistent

Victoria, British Columbia’s Brent Polischuk, has built a career that blends business operations with years of involvement in competitive hockey. As the owner-operator of a local delivery service, he manages logistics, people, and finances on a daily basis. At the same time, his background in hockey as a player, coach, and operations contributor has shaped how he approaches leadership and decision-making.
In this interview, Brent Polischuk shares how lessons from sport continue to guide his work and mindset. Over the years, he has also taken on event support, coaching, and community roles that required patience, structure, and calm judgment. Those experiences, combined with his day-to-day business responsibilities, have helped shape a practical leadership style built on preparation, accountability, and steady follow-through in demanding environments.
Q: You’ve spent years in both business and hockey. What lessons from sports still influence you today?
BRENT POLISCHUK: Sports teach you that consistency matters more than short bursts of effort. In hockey, you prepare every day, not just for games. That mindset carries over into business. You need routines, structure, and clear roles for things to work well. I also learned the value of teamwork early on. No one succeeds alone. Whether it is a team on the ice or a group of people managing operations, everyone has to trust each other and do their part.
Q: How has your experience in competitive hockey shaped your approach to leadership?
BRENT POLISCHUK: It taught me that leadership is not always loud. A lot of the time, it’s about being steady and reliable. In sports, players look to coaches and staff to stay calm, especially in pressure situations. I try to bring that same approach to my work. If something goes wrong, the focus should be on solving the problem, not reacting emotionally. I also think that it’s important to respect every role. When people feel valued, they perform better.
Q: You’ve worked in high-pressure environments, including major hockey events. How do you stay focused when things get busy?
BRENT POLISCHUK: Preparation makes a big difference. If you take the time to plan ahead, a lot of problems can be avoided. When things do get busy, I try to focus on what I can control. Staying organized helps keep everything moving. I also think it is important to listen. Sometimes the best solutions come from the people directly involved. If you stay calm and pay attention, you can work through most situations without letting them get out of hand.
Q: Your current role involves managing operations and finances. How do you balance those responsibilities day to day?
BRENT POLISCHUK: It comes down to staying organized and paying attention to details. You have to track expenses, plan schedules, and make sure equipment is maintained. Financial management is a big part of that. If you understand your numbers, you can make better decisions. I try to review things regularly instead of waiting for issues to show up. That helps keep the business stable, reliable, and reduces stress for everyone involved over time.
Q: What advice would you give to young athletes or professionals who want to build strong habits for long-term success?
BRENT POLISCHUK: Focus on doing the basics well. Show up on time, be prepared, and follow through on your commitments. It sounds simple, but those habits make a big difference over time. I would also say to be patient. Progress does not happen overnight. If you stay consistent and keep learning, results will come. Whether it is in sports or business, reliability builds trust, and trust leads to more opportunities.
